Masters of Harmony to Offer Music Education Scholarships
Mark Freedkin, May 5, 2007
It has become well known throughout Southern California and the entire Barbershop Harmony Society that the Masters of Harmony has organized and sponsored young men’s harmony festivals and other youth-related activities over the past nine years. More recently, the MOH has established a Music Education Scholarship program that provides financial support to deserving students from Santa Fe High School who plan to pursue advanced education in vocal music. The first scholarship grant of $500 was awarded in 2005, and this year we plan to quadruple that amount by offering up to $2,000 in cash grants to deserving students.
Assisting us in the application, selection and review process will be David Kwon, choral music teacher at Santa Fe High School and one of our newest singers. Scholarship applications have been prepared and will be made available to students soon. A committee of MOH leaders and education administrators will evaluate the applications received, and the scholarships will be awarded at the Senior Awards Ceremony that will be held at the school on June 4.
To be eligible for a scholarship award, the student must be a graduating senior who plans to attend college and major in choral music education, has lived in the City of Santa Fe Springs for at least one year, and has maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or better. A brief essay describing why the applicant believes he or she should be awarded a scholarship grant is also required.
In keeping with our Mission Statement, the Masters of Harmony is proud to be supporters of music and arts education in our schools. As we continue to build this program, we look forward to providing additional kinds of support and encouragement in the future.
